Money grubber Monday
I had to go to wallyworld for some goldfish and observed 3+ aisles of Christmas decorations and wrapping paper at 75% for most of it...and it was still there! A real sign of the times. It seems where ever we go, we can all see the effects of the recession. There are just somethings we can do to save ourselves from overspending and this is my contribution for today.
As you all know, (oh my Lord, she is gonna bring it up again!), my kids, the earthfamily are expecting and are very frugal people. My son had pointed out to me that he found a pattern for making diapers from old t-shirts...so I ran with it.
I checked google for expectant parents on the cost of cloth vs. disposable. The range went from $1600-2400 per infant, and that is not even the carbon footprint you are starting the baby out with. I had no idea. Then I started thinking about, what do parents do in a disaster situation for diapers? I can't fix the milk issue but the nappies are easy peasy and literally free. There are a jillion places online, including ebay and etsy, that sell the "new" cloth diapers. They are made from PUL...a sheer soft plastic underlining with a pretty double knit cover. I bought 3 yards on etsy from this seller and have made re-usable breast pads. The PUL is a breeze to sew, comes in 60" widths and washes very well. My daughter has been using them with her baby and loves them. If you check etsy, you can find a lot of sellers who make these. Very tres chic...but, the baby is going to pee in it! They can be rather expensive. They are, what we older mommies from Noahs' era, used to call rubber pants. They still need the liner, hence, the t-shirt nappie.
I checked at my local favorite thrift store and asked the owner if she throws out clothing...like t-shirts. Yep, several a week. So I had her save some=free. I washed and dried them and cut all the seams out. (a typical fabric/hoarder stash...a huge box of t-shirt knit fabric minus the seams, lol!)

Lets see, oh yeah, right. So pin the little dickens together and sew with 1/4" seam. I did go over a few areas with the intent to keep the wadding (am I not just getting the greatest words from my bloggy friends in the Southern Hemisphere?) from shifting.

No, it's not very pretty...but it's free and it's use belies the aesthetics. I purposely made the underside a little thicker...it's a girl. For a boy, I would have added a little more padding to the front part. This nappie is for use with the AIO cover
I have read that a lot of the AIOs don't fit the newborn, this is perfect! No plastic for the earthbaby...lol. I know this is a quilt blog, but I had a request on my blog and 2 emails asking for this tutorial. Thanks for bearing with me.

I cut a template out of an old piece of plastic and shaped it like what I perceived a diaper should look like.
I had some pieces of sleeve that I folded up and laid into the center, then took the other piece of (the same) shirt and folded the edges under and laid it on top and pinned it in place.
(The hardest part for me was finding the "right" setting on my machine. This is the important part: I AM NOT A SEAMSTRESS....I AM A QUILTER! Whoa, I feel better now. Anyhoodles, play with your machine, get wacky with the dials and stuff. Every setting I came up with was a bigger mess then the last. I went thru 5 machine needles and lots of nasty words before I finally found the setting for this. T-shirt fabric, since it is knit, is a pain in the butt to sew. This worked for me!)
AIO=all in one
or a wool soaker. I haven't finished the soaker yet, still in the thinking stage, but it's cut out. I just can't decide if I need to do it by hand or machine, after all, I do have a few needles unbroken.
Now, here she is, Vanna, do me the honors please:
I am actually working on my embroidery quilt pattern, don't give up on me yet...and a little peek at another embroidery...yep, a baby quilt, lol!
Maybe tomorrow ,oh it's delicious!
Are any of you doing anything special to save money or stockpile or just another way to do something a lot cheaper...hmm, I am curious.

A tribute to frogs everywhere!
I had the most fun today with the, "It's Not Easy Being Green", quilt for my grandson. It is featured in the August 2009 Quilters World magazine. It's 49"x73".
It calls for Batik fabrics so I used those thru out. It also calls for machine applique which I CANNOT DO AT ALL!, so I hand appliqued with blanket stitch and my favorite Valdani threads. I got impatient so put the top together before I finished the frogs, lol! When I got to the outer border I remembered I had a couple bolts of different water lilies. I used the plain one and am very happy with my choice. I love it and hope Liam does to.
Tomorrow I am going to machine quilt it, thanks be to Amanda Jean from crazymomquilts. She is the most awesome inspiring quilter in the world! I only hope she realizes how much she inspires others to bite the bullet and plow ahead!
Enjoy, now go quilt something...Elaine

~~~Glamping with my girls~~~
I just received the latest issue of Mary Janes Farm and it's flying out the door...I better grab my issue quick. If you have not seen this magazine yet you are truly missing something. When the nice lady called and asked if I would carry it in my store, the conversation went kind of like this
Lady: Would you like to carry Mary Janes Farm in your shop?
Me: Ahhh, this is a quilt shop.
Lady: Oh this is perfect for you. There are sewing items, embroidery, crafty things and an organic edge geared towards women.
Me: ok
The best decision I have EVER made! Mary Jane Butters lives in Idaho and produces organic foods. She is possibly the biggest hero I have. This month they have an article on how to make your own oilcloth table cloth, fishing lure jewelry, etc. Last issue was dedicated to honey bees.
There is a really cute article on glamping this month complete with ladies and their glampers. It has inspired me to invite my daughters to go glamping at the end of October to the Texas coast. No husbands, kids or pets. No chili, spaghetti, or processed foods.
The girls are really looking forward to this. One daughter lives in Cali the other in Wash state. Now I just have to find leopard print midi pants for all 3 of us, lol!
I love Mary Janes Farm!
Waiting on a man~~~
My husband asked if I wanted to go with him to a gun show. I took a handful of piecing and embroidery projects to work on. I would just as soon sit in the truck and let my husband take his time, not have to answer my goofy questions and wander at his leisure. We actually do this for each other...he sits in the truck while I wander the aisles at my favorite thrift stores.
After he was done we hit our favorite antique shop...if you ever get to Terrell, Texas and you have the time...and you love shabby chic, this is the place to visit. I didn't remember my camera...ughhhh!!!...but next time I won't. I believe it's 2 ladies and they specialize in shabby chic, 30's French apartment, linens, architectural elements from old buildings and just fun stuff. I have to go back very soon and take my camera. I told the lady I wanted to work there. She has a blog at http://jrne.blogspot.com/ but no pics as of this am, bummer. I guess I will have to try some next week..hopefully.
We had a great weekend together, polished off the day with bar-b-que from our favorite restaurant in Canton.
I better get my shop ready for First Monday. Wahoo. Have a great week, Elaine
My version of a classic~~~
One of my biggest thrills in life is to find a true vintage or antique quilt. Even if it's in poor shape, I love it. I have found that in this part of the country, East Texas, I have found some true treasures. The prices have shot up dramatically in the past 5 years since I have been buying but it doesn't seem to stop me.
I wanted to share one of these little gems. After a lot of research, baby dahlia seems to be the name. I am sure there are a dozen more, but I settled on baby dahlia. I found a row of torn, dirty and sad blocks in disrepair and bought them anyway. Always the orphan hunter! I put my own spin on them and made them into a table runner. As luck would have it my wild flowers were cooperating and so was my camera. I made some into kits for my shop selling for $29.99. I enjoyed putting this runner together (20" x 46"), a little applique (running stitch), embroidery and hand quilting. It's rather difficult to see but I added a ton of french knots in the center. The kit includes the backing. All you have to add is the pearl cotton,( I love the look and feel of Valdani threads for most of my needs) needle, batting, freezer paper and thread for piecing and quilting.
I need to get back to my sewing room...rearranging my stash...and settling my shop into place. Hoping you have a wonderful day...Elaine
