Yippeee...spring is coming!

Check out my front porch...do you see it?

There, in the dormant flower pot....my little black bantam hen. She had 13 eggs in it, and is determined to be the mom of the year.

I'll share another pic tomorrow. I wasn't sure what to do with her, so I grabbed a dog carrier, turned labor room, and put her, pot and all, in the cage. Of course there is hay laid down, a water jug and plenty of food for the chooklets. I checked on her later in the day and found a wee baby wandering around, below the pot. I lifted her out and put her in the cage and moved each egg in, where she promptly moved them beneath her.

So far, we have 4 babies! I think my grandmother would be proud.
***Disclaimer: the porcelain bedpan seen under the porch swing is an actual water bath for the birds in the summer...some nurses have sick senses of humor***

Love the bedpan for a birdbath. I have old toilet suite with an old lit shade for a bird bath.

  9. Hey Elaine
How are the baby chicks doing? My brother in law got 20 chicks about a year ago. They have been laying for a few months now...we pick (the kids pick) up an average of 18 eggs everyday! The best eggs are farm eggs. I asked if he would consider letting one of the hens sit on a nest but he said he prefers to buy them at the local ag store. Needless to say, we have not been buying eggs for a while. We have 3 families using these eggs. best omlets around!
Where have you been! I have not seen you post in a long time!
